Intro to Aerial Circus Arts
Please read through all of the information on this page in order to be prepared for the course — registration information is at the bottom of this page.
What will I learn in an Intro to Aerial mini session?
During an intro to aerial arts mini session at Moody Street Circus students will learn:
The foundational skills, wraps, safety details, conditioning drills, and techniques for aerial silks. Students will begin to explore linking skills to create short flows and combinations that will help build their muscles and endurance. These details and skills will depend on the apparatus of the intro session.
One of our goals during an intro session is to prepare our students for the pre-requisites of the beginner level for that apparatus. By the end of the session our goal is that students are able to safely and confidently execute those skills with grace.
What happens after the intro-session is complete?
Once a student has completed an intro-level aerial arts mini-session they are typically able to progress to our beginner classes.
Students must meet and feel confident in executing the intro-session pre-requisites in order to register for the mini-session and progress at the pace of the class. It is important that students take their conditioning outside of the studio seriously to maintain safe practice. However some students may need more than one session to feel comfortable with the material - and that is normal!
Private lessons (or semi-private with another intro level friend!) can supplement training, or one can re-join the waitlist for another intro level session.
After an intro-level session or private lesson concludes we make personal recommendations to students for the best option to continue their practice.
Students must submit their waiver PRIOR to registering for the course.
Registrations made without a completed waiver will be cancelled.

VIDEO DEMO OF ALL PRE-REQUISITES
DESCRIPTION: Welcome to the MSC community! Your intro session will be led by the MSC family - mother-daughter duo Melinda & Zoë.
Over the course of your mini session you will learn the foundational skills, drills and movements of aerial silks, with taster moments including aerial sling as well!
MSC classes focus on SAFE practice including body awareness and movement quality. We emphasize learning through slow and controlled motions, repetition and choreography. Even though our approach may seem gentle, circus arts is still a difficult hobby to engage in - and involves a LOT of hard work both in the studio and through at home practice! Certain positions, wraps and exercises can be uncomfortable, but we promise it all gets easier with time and practice. Students who excel in our mini sessions are creative beings and hard workers who understand the dedication needed to grow in aerial arts including body work and mindset.
Students are expected to come into the mini session capable of performing all pre-requisite skills as demonstrated in our intro pre-requisites video (linked above). The pre-requisites are in place to ensure our intro sessions do not become "mixed-level". but instead have a small number of students who are all ready to progress with the MSC intro foundations within the time constraint of the mini-session. It is important to know that students who do not meet the pre-requisites, but still register, are not guaranteed to be able to move forward into our "beginner" classes. Once an introductory session concludes we make personal recommendations to each student for the best option to continue their practice at MSC.
After the intro-level mini session students are generally either able to join beginner silks classes, continue with private lessons, or rejoin the waitlist for the next intro session.
Students who register for this intro-level mini session also get a discounted rate of a 1:1 private lesson (deal of $80, typically $100)! Students can use this private lesson anytime from the date of their registration through January 1st 2025. This lesson is non-transferrable and must be used by student registered for the session.
Every student learns and progresses at a different rate in aerial arts - there is not one linear or timed path!
STUDENTS WILL LEARN :
Aerial silk climbs, foot-lock positions & transitions.
Short beginner choreographies and combinations.
Intro to inversions and inverted positions on aerial sling/ silk knot.
Strength building exercises (both with the apparatus and on-the-floor to translate to at-home practice).
Graceful movement pathways
& so much more!
CLASS FORMAT:
90 Minute Class includes a 15 minute group warm up on the ground. When we move to the silks we begin with drills and conditioning exercises to activate the body for aerial movements. Then students will be walked through the foundational skills/wrap/movements we will focus on in that class before moving forward with sequencing and linking skills into short combinations. Class ends with strength building drills and a cool down on the mat!
Other Important details:
Students must arrive ON TIME (aka 5 minutes before class start). Doors lock 10 minutes after class start.
Classes at MSC are focused spaces. Phones must be turned off (students will be invited to film/ take photos when it is permitted).
We encourage students to ask questions in the moment!
Communication is KEY. Students registered for MSC classes must be checking their emails regularly.
