  • Zoë records many choreography card combos, explaining creation from start finish using both lecture, choreography and demonstration/ tutortial formats. The class moves from drawing the cards, through the flow, and into technical details and tutorials.

Students do not need to own a deck of the choreography cards in order to benefit or enjoy this class!

Class is broken down into four parts:

CARDS: Zoë chooses her choreography tasks and movement prompts to generate this choreography card combo. One by one she talks through the cards and what possible skills or variations come to mind for her. She goes over the classic way to play with the cards, choosing 5 choreography tasks and 4 movement prompts to create a flow. Follow along to understand her mapping process for choosing the order of the flow, the transitions between skills, and the different ways of interpreting the cards she draws. The CARDS section of class ends with the fully mapped combo laid out for your view.

CREATION: In the CREATION part of this online class, Zoë takes to the silks to start piecing together the card combinations. She’ll pick a section generated from the map, or a specific card to start with. During this section you will see how she chooses to piece the skills together and style them, layering on the movement prompts. This is an organic part of class that results in the full pieces of the flow being demonstrated.

CHOREOGRAPHY: Once the choreography card map has been rehearsed, Zoë “performs” the choreography to a song. In the choreography you can see how the choreography tasks and movement prompts have been layered and added to to create a flow full of movement, technique, styles and musicality linked into one.

TECHNIQUE: During the technique part of class, Zoë goes back to break down each of the skills and transitions that were involved in the choreography. Making sure to include safety tips, stylistic ideas and ways to fix common problems with wraps, movements or provide alternative entries/exits/skills for different shapes or tricks.

During “class” students are encouraged to take notes and use their own decks (if they have them handy). Pausing the video to practice alongside Zoë can be helpful - or you can watch it like a lecture to then practice independently later. After learning Zoë’s way of interpreting the set of cards drawn in the video, students are encouraged to go back to the basic choreography tasks and movement prompts to see if they can create their own map of the skills - a new flow - a new combo - or just think of other ways the cards could be interpreted to fit their own skills or movement style!

  • DISCLAIMER: Aerial arts are a ∫ dangerous practice. They require body awareness, control (ability to hold positions and move through pathways with respect for transitions), and strength built through good form habits learned in classes and lessons with a qualified coach. Learning from online resources can be a great avenue when also accompanied by hands-on coaching - there are many nuances to aerial wraps and positioning, engagement or control of the body that are difficult to understand the reasoning or importance behind. Always work safely over a mat and always try new things from the ground first! All exercises in this manual are executed at your own risk. Moody Street Circus LLC and all persons involved in the creation of this guide will not accept responsibility for injury to any degree as a result of practicing the drills in this manual. Always consult a professional rigger to make sure your apparatus is safe.

Skills are best ”unwrapped” with a coach at your side!
